Join us this Wednesday for a night of free local gypsy jazz in this week’s edition of Beer and Jazz at Goodwood. The show will roll into a jam session with other local musicians.
The core group will be players from SWING ‘39, a fine local gypsy jazz quartet. Its goal is to resurrect the sound of guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli in their years together in Paris just before World War II. Along with other players in the quintet of the Hot Club of Paris, Django and Grappelli crafted a unique style – a mixture of American jazz and Parisian dance hall music spiced with Gypsy stylings. Often referred to as “hot club” the sound they made famous has become part of a larger genre known as “gypsy jazz”. Swing 39 plays the original compositions of Django and popular tunes by composers such as Cole Porter, Gershwin, and Ellington in this style. The result is music that is full of a contagious attitude which is energetic, sassy, and lots of fun.
This is the fifth in a weekly series co-presented by the Goodwood Taproom and the Louisville Jazz Society. Each Wednesday there’s a a different style of jazz – mainstream, gypsy, singers, international, traditional, etc. The band of the evening will perform from 7 PM to 8:30 PM followed by an open jazz jam that will include talented students and graduates from Louisville’s two fine collegiate jazz programs as well as other local musicians.
