First Annual Logan Street Market Jazz Festival – Saturday, Sept. 14th

The Louisville Jazz Society is proud to co-sponsor the First Annual Logan Street Market Jazz Festival! Hosted by the Logan Street Market, this festival realizes owner Mike Safai’s long-time vision of producing a jazz festival here in Louisville.

The day-long event will feature performances by four groups showcasing the wide range of musicians and styles that Louisville has to offer.

The festival is headlined by The Jamey Aebersold Quartet, performing at 7:00pm. Louisville’s Iconic Jazz Maestro and saxophonist has been an instrumental teacher, revered around the world for jazz education and dedication to the tradition.

The Buzzard closes the festival, playing from 8:45-10:00 pm. Members have played with jazz greats including Joe Henderson, Eddie Harris, Jack McDuff, Sammy Davis Jr., Stan Getz, and Gary Burton. These guys keep busy, playing Friday nights in NuLu, and continue to influence and inspire the newer crop of local musicians. Members include Tim Whalen, sax; Marlin McKay, Trumpet, flugelhorn; Pete Petersen, piano; Danny Kiely, bass; and Mike Hyman, drums.

Performing at 5:30, Hermanos Latin Groove is a 6-piece Latin Jazz band featuring a diverse group of instrumentalists from various musical and cultural backgrounds. Headed by saxophonist Rob Nickerson, Hermanos creates a fusion of American and Latin American music, blending great melodies with electrifying rhythms. In addition to Rob on sax, players include Ivo Ferigra on Trombone, Winton Reynolds on piano, Yody Hernandez Marti on bass, Caleb Leiva on Conga, and Johnny Castaneda on drums.

ChomskyJazz Central, a straight-ahead acoustic collective including UoL’s top students and graduates, plays their set at 4:00 pm. Drummer Dean Thomas leads these rising stars, including Will Doty on Piano, Drew Thomas Miller on sax, Craig Twedell on trumpet, and Lee Puckett on upright bass.

Subtle Changes kicks of the festival at 2 pm. This collective of upcoming local musicians mixes a combination of jazz fusion with standard bop with a little edge. Joe Coleman.
