The Louisville Jazz Society is thrilled to present brilliant jazz violinist Sara Caswell and phenomenal jazz vocalist Rachel Caswell with their quintet for our first Masters Series concert of the year.
The riveting performances of the Caswell Sisters, vocalist Rachel and violinist Sara, are the culmination of years of working together. Their seamless sound combined with their unique interpretation of repertoire ranging from the “Great American Songbook” to contemporary jazz, including their own compositions, is propelled by arresting improvisation. Sara and Rachel co-lead the Caswell Sisters Quintet and have made such notable appearances as a weeklong After-Hours engagement at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.
Voted into the DownBeat Magazine Critics and Readers Polls every year since 2013, Sara has released three highly-acclaimed albums under her own name and has been part of groups led by Esparanza Spalding, Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade, and most recently Chris Potter.
Renowned jazz pedagog David Baker referred to Rachel Caswell as “that rara avis who is truly a jazz vocalist. Her intonation is impeccable, her diction precise, her jazz sensibilities above reproach, and she swings like mad!” Rachel has performed and recorded with artists including Lynne Arriale, Steve Davis, Dave Stryker, Jeremy Allen, the Billy Taylor Trio and Fred Hersch.
